While it may seem gimmicky, this research helps advance AI’s understanding of humor and creative abstract thinking.

Surreal Confectionery Inventions

Anthropic, an AI safety startup, trained one of its AI systems to generate new candy recipes based on its analysis of existing confectionaries. With eccentric flavor combinations like lychee cream and passion fruit pectin, the AI’s dessert inventions are more akin to abstract art than actual recipes. The project displays how AI systems can remix information to create products that are novel but not very usable.

Recursive Self-Improving Algorithms

Uber AI Labs developed an AI capable of recursively self-improving its own code to enhance its learning capabilities over time. Turning Psychic Visions into Images

Nvidia used a generative adversarial network trained on a dataset of purported psychic visions to create images from textual descriptions. For example, it could generate an image of “a green haze” based on its training, even if it had never seen that exact phrase before. This demonstrates how AI can learn to conjure up imaginary visuals that resemble human imagination.

AI Dungeon Masters Roleplaying Games

AI Dungeon is a text-based adventure game where an AI serves as the dungeon master, inventing stories and worlds based solely on natural language interactions with the user. With no human oversight, the AI crafts open-ended narratives that users can shape through conversational commands. This application of AI displays its potential for spontaneous creativity.

While these experiments may seem far-fetched, they enable breakthroughs in AI capabilities that could have practical future applications. Pushing AI into unstructured creative domains advances the field’s progress. The line between human and artificial intelligence continues to get blurrier as research like this expands the perceived limitations of AI systems. We are likely only scratching the surface of what AI will be able to accomplish in the coming decades.
